Compatibility: Again, Canon is not very specific, but suggests that the Extender EF 2x III is compatible with most telephoto and telephoto zoom lenses within Canon’s flagship professional L-series range. This teleconverter extends the focal length while only reducing the effective aperture of the lens by two stops.

I was just curious if a Canon extender, specifically the canon EF 2X III, will work on the Tamron and/or Sigma lenses. Note that I currently own the Sigma 1.4x teleconverter but I'm not very happy with its IQ. sigma tamron teleconverter Share Improve this question Follow edited Jun 11, 2018 at 17:38 mattdm 143k 52 417 739 asked Jan 8, 2014 at 13:27
Canon refers to their models as ‘ Extenders ’ and all camera manufacturers generally design one or two standardised models, which are typically 1.4x and 2x. This multiplier refers to the magnification which will be achieved, with 40% greater reach (1.4x) up to double (2x). For example a 300mm lens will become either a 420mm or 600mm lens
The Full User Guide for the cameras explains “Lens Groups” in detail. The 2x extender fill cause the maximum aperture to change from f/4 to f/8. In this mode you will have only one active AF point, the center AF point. Because of the reduction in light reaching the AF sensor, focusing speed will take a noticeable hit.
Sigma's dedicated 2x APO teleconverter can be mounted between select lenses and the camera body to increase the focal length by the power of 2.0x. The new multi layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. They demonstrate best performance with DG series lenses. It also offers maximum photography
2x increase of the lens's focal length; Dustproof and waterproof specifications (JIS 2 equivalent) Lens placement and coatings are optimized to minimize the ghosting; Built-in microcomputer in the extenders enables communication between lens, extender and camera
Teleconverters are one of those things people buy when they first start in photography because they sound like a neat idea. However, they soon get put in a drawer and never get used again because they really don't work that well in practice.
